Leo Fender and his design team intended that the new 1959 Jazzmaster and Jaguar models would draw jazz guitarists, predominantly Gibson players, towards Fender guitars. This did not quite work out as expected and instead they found popularity in the Surf genre.
In 1982, Fender introduced the American Vintage series and for 2013 this series included the American Vintage 1965 Jazzmaster. Effective in 2018, this line has been replaced with the American Original series.
Here we have an early release, 2013 American Vintage 1965 Jazzmaster in three tone sunburst, the yellow-red-black scheme found on so many 1960’s Fender models. This instrument is in very good, all original condition and the case includes the unopened bags of ‘Case Candy’, hang tags, strap and Fender documentation. For this series, the finish is nitrocellulose lacquer, and this is settling nicely.
This instrument is in very good condition with no real wear or damage, though there is a bit of crinkling and flaking on part of the headstock decal. The original case is in equally good condition.
The Jazzmaster and Jaguar introduced a new locking tremolo (or vibrato, depending on who is using the term) system. This wasn’t locking in the sense we use it today – here it means you can lock the trem in place to prevent pitch changes. The bridge is a separate semi-floating unit, with a pair of height-adjustable posts. The saddles are threaded rods, with the threads allowing for accurate string placement.
The most complex feature on these guitars is the wiring and its secondary rhythm / lead controls. The slider switch and extra volume and tone roller controls on the bass side of the neck pickup provide a way to preset the neck pickup output – helpful since there otherwise master volume and tone controls.
