1963 Gibson J-45 Sunburst (consignment) SOLD

The Gibson J-45 is justifiably one of the most popular steel string guitars ever. The physical design of the slope-shoulder dreadnought is comfortable standing or sitting – not too large – and the tone is full, rich and warm without being boomy in the bottom or harsh in the high end. It fits perfectly into many musical genres.

Here is a lovely example of the 1963 Gibson J-45, with a key change made some years ago. This guitar originally was equipped with an adjustable bridge – a wooden or ceramic saddle carried on two height screws – and that has been replaced with a traditional fixed-saddle bridge.

The Gibson J-45 traditionally features a spruce top paired with mahogany back, sides and neck with rosewood for the fingerboard and bridge. This gives an exellent balance of warmth and brightness. The Kluson-type tuners with plastic buttons were standard on the J-45 for so many years that Gibson actually ran into some resistance when they upgraded to Grover Roto-Matic style tuners on the newest models!

The top has had some touchups, and there is some fretwear, but overall the guitar is in good condition and plays quite well. And, it has that tone that wraps so comfortably around everything.
